Carrier furnace Status code 24: Secondary voltage fuse is open
Code 24 means the 24 volt fuse has blown. Carrier documents the cause as a short circuit in the secondary voltage wiring — the fuse is the symptom, and the short is still there.
Applies to: Carrier 58MCB four-way multipoise condensing gas furnaces and related models using the same integrated furnace control. Bryant and Payne furnaces of the same generation use the same control and code set.
What it means
The control carries a fuse protecting the 24 volt secondary circuit, which powers the thermostat, the gas valve, and the safety switches. Carrier's documentation gives one cause: a short circuit in the secondary voltage wiring. That framing is worth taking literally, because it tells you what not to do. A fuse does not wear out — it blew because current went somewhere it should not have, and replacing it without finding the short simply blows the replacement. Carrier's own installation instructions note that a furnace with twinned controls will flash this code if the twinning is not correctly configured, which is a specific and easily missed cause on installations with two furnaces.
Most common causes
- A short circuit in the 24 volt secondary wiring — Carrier's documented cause.
- Thermostat wiring shorted, often where it passes through a wall or over a sharp edge.
- A thermostat wire pinched by a panel or shorted to the cabinet.
- Damaged wiring at an outdoor unit, where the same circuit often runs.
- A shorted gas valve, transformer, or other 24 volt component.
- A wiring error made during a thermostat replacement.
- On twinned installations, incorrect twinning configuration.
How to diagnose it
- Note when the fault started. Immediately after a thermostat change, a smart thermostat installation, or work at the outdoor unit points at the wiring disturbed.
- Check whether the thermostat display is blank, which confirms the low voltage side is dead.
- Note whether a previously replaced fuse blew again quickly — that is diagnostic and worth reporting.
- On an installation with two furnaces, mention the twinning to the technician.
How to fix it
- This is technician work. Finding a short in low voltage wiring means tracing the circuit safely.
- Do not fit a larger fuse. The rating protects the transformer and the board, and a bigger one lets the fault damage components worth far more.
- Have the short found rather than the fuse replaced. A visit that only changes the fuse has not finished the job.
- If a thermostat was recently installed, say so. Miswiring during smart thermostat installation is a leading cause and quickly checked.
Notes
This code makes a furnace look completely dead while the fault is a cheap fuse and a damaged wire. It is also the code where fitting whatever fuse is to hand causes real damage — the rating exists to protect the transformer, not the fuse.
