Goodman furnace dF: Defrost demand
dF means the outdoor heat pump is defrosting and the furnace is aware of it. It is normal operation on a dual fuel system, not a fault.
Applies to: Goodman GMVM97 and GCVM97 modulating gas furnaces with a two-character alphanumeric display, installed as part of a dual fuel system with a heat pump.
What it means
In a dual fuel system a heat pump provides heating in mild conditions and the gas furnace takes over when it is colder. Heat pumps accumulate frost on their outdoor coil and periodically run a defrost cycle to clear it, during which they cannot heat the house. The furnace displays dF while that is happening. What confuses people is what a defrost cycle looks like from outside: steam rising from the outdoor unit, the fan stopping, and sometimes a brief burst of cold air indoors. All of that is normal, and the furnace showing dF is confirmation the system is coordinating rather than malfunctioning.
Most common causes
- The outdoor heat pump is running a normal defrost cycle. This is expected in cold damp conditions.
- Frost accumulation on the outdoor coil triggering defrost.
- The system coordinating between heat pump and furnace as designed.
How to diagnose it
- Confirm the system is dual fuel — a gas furnace paired with a heat pump. If it is not, this code should not appear.
- Note whether the outdoor unit is steaming, which is normal during defrost and often mistaken for something burning.
- Note how long it lasts. A defrost cycle is typically a few minutes.
- Note whether defrost cycles are becoming very frequent, which can indicate a heat pump problem rather than a furnace one.
How to fix it
- Nothing to fix. This is normal dual fuel operation.
- If defrost cycles run very frequently or last unusually long, have the heat pump checked rather than the furnace.
- Keep the outdoor unit clear of snow drifts and vegetation, which makes frosting worse.
- Do not switch the system to emergency heat routinely to avoid defrost, since that runs the more expensive heat source unnecessarily.
Notes
Steam pouring off an outdoor unit in winter alarms people reliably, and it is simply frost melting. A furnace display confirming defrost demand is a useful reassurance that the system knows what it is doing.
