Trane furnace Flashing fast: Normal — call for heat
A fast steady flash means the control has a call for heat and is working through the heating sequence. It is a normal indication, not a fault.
Applies to: Trane and American Standard upflow, downflow and horizontal gas-fired direct vent condensing furnaces covered by Installer's Guide 18-CD29D1-14-EN, using the integrated furnace control described there.
What it means
Trane's control uses a fast flash to indicate a call for heat is present. It is the counterpart to the slow flash idle indication, and it means the thermostat has asked for heat and the control is acting on it. This is useful during troubleshooting because it confirms the signal arrived: a fast flash with no heat means the furnace is trying and something in the sequence is not completing, which is a completely different investigation from a furnace that was never asked. It is worth distinguishing carefully from a rapid flash indicating a fault on other manufacturers' controls, since fast flashing on this control is normal.
Most common causes
- The thermostat is calling for heat and the furnace is responding. This is normal operation.
- The furnace is in its start sequence — inducer prepurge, ignition, or blower on-delay.
- A call for heat is present but the sequence is stalling at a step that has not yet produced a fault code.
How to diagnose it
- Note how long the fast flash continues without heat. A normal sequence takes under a minute from call to burners.
- Listen for the inducer starting, which is the first step and confirms the sequence has begun.
- If the fast flash continues with no inducer, no ignition, and no eventual fault code, note that for the technician — a stalled sequence with no code is unusual and worth reporting precisely.
- Wait for a fault code to appear if the sequence fails, since that will name the step that did not complete.
How to fix it
- Nothing to fix if the furnace goes on to heat normally.
- If the fast flash persists with no heat and no fault code, the sequence is stalling and a technician is needed.
- Do not interrupt power while trying to observe this, since on many controls that clears stored codes.
- Note the point in the sequence where it stops — inducer, ignition, or blower — as that is the most useful thing a homeowner can report.
