Goodman furnace rapid red flashing: Twinning error

Rapid red flashing indicates a twinning error. Twinning is where two furnaces are wired to work together on one system, and this code means that coordination has failed.

Applies to: Goodman GMEC96 and Amana AMEC96 two-stage gas furnaces with a three-colour diagnostic LED, on installations where two furnaces are twinned to operate together.

What it means

Twinning links two furnaces so they operate as a single system, sharing a thermostat and starting together. The twinning circuit carries the coordination between them, and this code means it has failed. The most useful first question is whether the installation is actually twinned at all — many are not, and a twinning code on a single furnace points at the wiring or the control rather than at a second furnace that does not exist. On a genuinely twinned pair, the fault may lie with either unit, so checking only the one displaying the code can miss the cause entirely.

Most common causes

• Twinning wiring damaged, loose, or disconnected between the two furnaces.
• Twinning configured incorrectly at installation.
• One of a twinned pair losing power, so the other cannot coordinate with it.
• One of the pair having faulted, breaking the coordination.
• A control board fault in the twinning circuitry.
• A single furnace producing the code through a wiring or control fault, with no twinning present.

How to diagnose it

1. Establish first whether the installation genuinely has two furnaces twinned together.
2. On a twinned installation, check whether both furnaces have power and whether the other has faulted.
3. Confirm the flashing is rapid red rather than a counted red pattern, since counted red codes are individual faults.
4. Note whether the fault followed recent work on either furnace.

How to fix it

1. On a genuinely twinned system, the twinning wiring and configuration are technician work.
2. Have both furnaces checked rather than only the one showing the code, since the fault may originate at the other.
3. If the installation is not twinned, the code points at wiring or the control board and still needs a technician.
4. Do not disconnect twinning to make the code go away. Twinned furnaces are configured that way for a reason, and running them uncoordinated can produce airflow and venting problems.

Notes

Twinning is uncommon in ordinary homes and more usual in larger properties or commercial spaces. If you have never heard the term and this code appears, establishing whether your system is twinned is the first useful question rather than a technical detail.
