Rapid red flashing indicates a twinning error or incorrect 24 volt phasing. York's table carries an explicit instruction alongside it: do not twin ECM motors.
Applies to: York, Luxaire and Coleman gas furnaces using the UTEC integrated furnace control boards documented in technical service letter ST-045-09. York states plainly that X-13 ECM motors and variable speed ECM motors must not be twinned.
What it means
Twinning links two furnaces to operate together on one system, and this code means that coordination has failed or the 24 volt supplies are out of phase. What makes York's documentation notable is the warning printed next to it: do not twin X-13 ECM motors, and do not twin variable speed ECM motors. That is not a troubleshooting step but a design constraint — some motor types cannot be twinned at all, and an installation that has done so is misconfigured rather than faulty. Anyone meeting this code should establish which motor type the furnaces have before investigating anything else.

- Incorrect 24 volt phasing between twinned furnaces.

How to diagnose it
- Establish first whether the installation genuinely has two furnaces twinned together.
- Establish what motor type the furnaces use, since York prohibits twinning ECM motors of these types.
- On a twinned installation, check whether both furnaces have power and whether the other has faulted.
- Confirm the flashing is rapid red rather than a counted red pattern.
How to fix it
- If the furnaces use X-13 or variable speed ECM motors and have been twinned, that installation needs revisiting — York states these must not be twinned.
- On a correctly twinnable system, the twinning wiring and 24 volt phasing are technician work.
- Have both furnaces checked rather than only the one showing the code.
- Do not simply disconnect twinning to clear the code without understanding why the system was twinned.
Notes
A manufacturer printing a prohibition inside a fault code table is unusual and worth acting on. If the motors are the type York says must not be twinned, no amount of wiring correction will make the configuration valid.
