Goodman furnace b2: Blower motor horsepower mismatch
b2 means the blower motor fitted is not the size the control expects. This is almost always the result of a repair — the wrong motor went in, or the board was set up for a different one.
Applies to: Goodman GMVC96, GMVM97, GCVC96, GCVM97 and Amana AMVC96, AMVM97 series gas furnaces with a variable-speed ECM blower motor and a two-character display.
What it means
The control knows what size blower motor the furnace should have, and the motor reports its own rating over the communication link. When the two disagree, the control reports b2. This is essentially always an installation or repair fault rather than something that develops, because a motor's horsepower does not change in service. Either a replacement motor of the wrong rating was fitted, or a replacement control board was not configured for this furnace, or the model identification the board relies on is wrong. It matters because a mismatched motor delivers the wrong airflow, and wrong airflow on a gas furnace means either overheating or poor performance.
Most common causes
- A replacement blower motor of the wrong horsepower fitted during a repair.
- A replacement control board not configured for this furnace model.
- A generic or aftermarket motor that does not report the rating the board expects.
- A model identification jumper, plug, or setting incorrect on the board.
- A motor control module replaced separately from its motor and not matched to it.
- A furnace assembled or modified with parts from a different model in the range.
How to diagnose it
- Establish what work has been done recently. This code following a blower motor or control board replacement is the overwhelmingly likely story.
- Check the furnace model number on the rating plate and have it available for the technician.
- If parts paperwork or a service record exists, check what motor was actually fitted against what the model calls for.
- Note that a furnace showing b2 may still run. That does not mean the mismatch is harmless.
How to fix it
- This needs the technician who did the previous work, or a technician with the model's specifications to hand.
- The fix is to fit the correct motor for the model, or configure the replacement board correctly — not to ignore the code because the furnace appears to work.
- Do not accept a mismatched motor left in place because it seems to run. Airflow that is wrong for the furnace's output causes overheating on one side and poor performance on the other, and overheating is what damages heat exchangers.
- Keep the furnace's model number recorded somewhere accessible. It is what makes this fault quick to resolve.
Notes
This is one of a small number of furnace codes that essentially only appear after someone has worked on the equipment. If it shows up on a furnace nobody has touched, the model configuration on the board is the thing to question.
