Goodman furnace b7: Incomplete parameters sent to the motor
b7 means the control started telling the motor how to run and did not finish. The motor received a partial instruction and will not act on it.
Applies to: Goodman GMVC96, GMVM97, GCVC96, GCVM97 and Amana AMVC96, AMVM97 series gas furnaces with a variable-speed ECM blower motor and a two-character display.
What it means
Before a variable-speed motor runs, the control sends it a set of parameters — speed, ramp profile, and other operating instructions. The motor requires the complete set before acting, and refuses to run on a partial one, which is the correct behaviour: a blower running on half an instruction could deliver entirely wrong airflow. b7 means the transfer was interrupted or incomplete. This makes it a close relative of the communication error, and the causes overlap heavily, but the distinction is real: b1 means the conversation failed, while b7 means the conversation happened and was cut short.
Most common causes
- An intermittent communication harness or a connector not fully seated.
- Electrical noise corrupting the data transfer, often traceable to grounding.
- A failing control board sending incomplete data.
- A failing motor control module not receiving correctly.
- A mismatched motor and board combination after a repair.
- A brief power interruption during the transfer.
How to diagnose it
- Note whether the fault is intermittent. Intermittent transfer faults point at connections rather than components.
- Note whether it coincides with anything electrical elsewhere in the house.
- Note any recent service work in the blower compartment.
- Mention any recent motor or board replacement, since mismatched parts produce this and are quickly checked.
How to fix it
- Technician work. The harness runs alongside high voltage wiring in the blower compartment.
- Ask for connectors and the harness to be checked and reseated before components are replaced. This is the common and inexpensive cause.
- Have grounding checked if the fault is intermittent and the connections look sound, since electrical noise produces this.
- If a motor or board was recently fitted, confirm the parts match the model.
Notes
Like b1, this code does not mean the motor is faulty. Both are worth going into knowing that the wiring between the two components is a more likely culprit than either component.
